Well, WELL!!! This was a surprise.
The New York Film Critics Circle announced their award winners today, and David O. Russell's American Hustle took away three awards--Screenplay, Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence and Picture. Does this mean that Hustle is surely in the hunt for Best Picture at the Oscars? Probably.
I think we all need to calm down though. I am seeing tweets saying that this win threatens to take over 12 Years a Slave or Gravity for the top prize. It's only one awards body. Zero Dark Thirty won last year and that got knocked out of the way by controversy, so anything can happen, kiddos. The year isn't even over yet. Take a breath. If you are going to get this worked up over the NYFCC, then you are going to die of exhaustion by the time March 5th rolls around.
The National Board of Review announces their awards tomorrow. I've always viewed the NBR as the official kick off even though the NYFCC started announcing earlier. If Hustle wins there, then we can start freaking out. Check out the full list of winners below:
