Now and Then: Happy Birthday, Thora Birch!

"Max likes your yabos.  In fact, he loves 'em!"

Today is Thora Birch's 31st birthday.  I am officially old.  I first remember seeing her as Dani in my favorite Halloween movie (it should also be yours), Hocus Pocus.

Miss Birch and I crossed paths again when I became obsessed with Sam Mendes's American Beauty in the late 90's.  Thora does a good job of playing an angst-y teen, and, in Beauty, she definitely delivered.  She held her own with heavyweights Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening.

My favorite performance of Birch's, however, is probably in Terry Zwigoff's Ghost WorldWorld is the first time I paid attention to Scarlett Johansson, and she and Birch made a really great team as a couple of social outsiders who play a prank on Steve Buscemi, a record-entusiast.  If you haven't seen Ghost World, you should really check it out.  This scene alone is pure gold, especially if, like me, you ever worked at a movie theater.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, THORA!!!
