First Category Fraud of the Oscar Season: 'August: Osage County'

Well, this sucks.

Gold Derby reported yesterday that the Weinstein Co. is considering campaigning Meryl Streep for Best Supporting Actress for August: Osage County instead of Best Actress.  Does this make sense to anyone?
Deanna Dunagan won Best Actress at the Tony Awards for playing the role on Broadway.

There are multiple reasons why this is stupid.

1.  Meryl is almost guaranteed to get nominated for anything she does.  The role of Violet is a dream for an actress.  Are they trying to push co-star Julia Roberts in the Best Actress category?  Her history with the Oscars is nowhere near as reliable.  Let them both campaign for Best Actress.  It will be ok.

2.  The Weinstein Co. is also backing Lee Daniel's The Butler, and it's clear that Oprah Winfrey is going to get a major push for that drama.  Will Harvey Weinsten have to decide who to back come Oscar season?  Will the Queen of Media go head to head with the most nominated actress of all time?

3.  No one else could possibly get a nomination with Meryl in the way.  August has a large number of other actresses in supporting roles (Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Margo Martindale, the list goes on) who could potentially garner awards attention but might fail to actually get the recognition with Meryl being campaigned in the supporting category.  Nathaniel Rogers over at The Film Experience wrote up a cool piece about the whole debacle.

4.  This whole thing might blow up in TWC's faces.  Remember when Kate Winslet was being campaigned in the Supporting Actress race for The Reader?  The nominations came out and her obvious lead role won her an Oscar.  TWC might campaign Meryl in supporting, but the Academy might put her in lead anyway.

Just consider her for the lead category.  Use your head, people.
